DENTAL CAVITIES
Cavities are the result of demineralization of tooth structure. Demineralization is caused by acids contacting the tooth. Acids have several different sources but the most common is from bacteria in plaque (a sticky film on the tooth from which bacterial byproducts contact the tooth and break down the enamel). The bacteria convert the sugars and starches in the diet into acids. When the demineralization of the tooth is greater than the re-mineralization process a cavity developes. The demineralization - remineralization process is continuous 24 hrs day.
Prevention
Preventing cavities is based on causing the remineralization process to outpace the demineraization process. You can help this process by doing the following:
Limit your consumption of sweets and sodas
Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.
Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.
Ask us about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts.
