WHAT ARE THEY?

Lithium disilicate and zirconia inlays & onlays are tooth colored restorations. As the name denotes, they are  made out of ceramic material unlike some inlays that are made of gold or resin.  Unlike fillings that are made directly in the mouth, an impression is taken of the area after the area being treated has been cleaned and shaped. Using the impression the inlay/onlay is made indirectly in a dental laboratory. It usually takes two visits. A temporary filling is placed in the tooth while the restoration is being made.  At the second visit it is  cemented into the tooth by the dentist.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INLAY AND AN ONLAY?

Size only. The onlay replaces one or more missing cusps unlike the inlay.  By comparison, a crown usually covers the entire tooth.

WHEN CAN A PORCELAIN INLAY OR ONLAY BE USED?

There are many conditions in which they can be used. among them are: replacement of broken fillings, broken teeth, decayed teeth, and to eliminate unsightly silver fillings.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES

By using an inlay or onlay tooth structure can be preserved. Porcelain is harder than composite filling material and can be expected to last longer although no filling made of any material can be considered permanent. The fee is usually a little less than a crown but considerbly more than a filling made of silver or bonded composite.
