Porcelain Veneers - What are they?

Porcelain veneers are custom made thin shells that fit over your own teeth.  Although they are very thin they are quite strong once they are cemented into place with a special resin.

Why are they used?

Veneers can be used for multiple reasons. They can whiten teeth, repair broken and chipped teeth, close spaces and change misaligned or misshapen teeth.

What are the advantages of porcelain veneers?

In most cases little tooth structure needs to be removed. They are color stable, quite durable and with proper care they can be expected to last a long time.

Are there any disadvantages?

Although they are durable it is possible to chip or fracture porcelain veneers. This could require repair or replacement.  You should be evaluated for any habits that might have the potential for damaging veneers.  Cost may be a factor as fees for porcelain veneers can be significant due to lab costs and the precision required.

Are there other options?

Some patients can achieve excellent results with slight modification of tooth shape in conjunction with tooth bleaching.  Also, composite (resin) veneers are sometimes a better or alternate choice at less cost.
